A local mom is going to represent Ohio at the second annual 'Mom Congress' in Washington, D.C.
Hilary Frambes has a passion for art and she's taking that to the nation's capitol on April 10.
"I know art isn't the most important thing on people's agenda. Often [it's] more like math and science or helping kids read, so I was a little surprised that I got chosen," Frambes said.
A panel at Parenting Magazine thought she would be a great fit for the Mom Congress.
Frambes started an art enrichment after school class at Plain City Elementary School.
While other districts around the country cut art from their curriculum, students are learning to let their creative juices flow.
"It gives me a chance to express my true self," said Ally Kaizer, a Plain City Elementary School student.
Frambes, a Columbus College of Art and Design graduate, used to work as a graphic designer. Now she's taking the lead on projects in a different office and their current creation is art in a video.
"We thought it would be fun for these fourth-graders to explain Plain City Elementary in three words. Each of them are going to get a chance to develop a concept," Frambes said.
Popcorn balls, face and arm pain, whatever the idea is, it's going on camera.
It shows that the kids love art and they're proud to be a part of the program.
"I think it's really cool for a small city to have her go to Washington, D.C.," said Pete Sharp, a Plain City Elementary School student.
Frambes said she hopes to inspire others to consider starting similar programs.
"I'm sure there are other artists out there, moms maybe, who could start something like this at their own children's elementary, especially since arts are being cut," Frambes said.
She said she also hopes to learn more about standardized testing, and if the department of education plans to keep that a central part of children's education.
Frambes' children are accompanying her on the trip, but she said they'll be at the Smithsonian while she's in meetings."
